FISHING!

Ponds are for the use of Cobblestone Residents ONLY. We ask that you use a BLUE ribbon on your pole or person this year to note you are a Cobblestone Resident. If you do not have a visible ribbon, you may be asked for proof of residency.

If someone is not a resident and using the pond, feel free to call the non-emergency number to the police at 217-788-8311. Please help protect the fish and wildlife by removing any garbage you find around the ponds while out. Thank you!

No fish were stocked in 2024 or 2025. Four hundred (400) channel catfish were stocked in the ponds in 2023 and 700 in 2022 for a total of 75 per acre stocked in each pond since 2022. Angling success and density seems to remain low after a year of monitoring and we may stock additional channel catfish this spring if funds are available. Catfish, unlike largemouth bass and bluegill, do not reproduce well on their own in ponds.

If you catch any channel catfish, please let Nathan know and send a photo. No electrofishing surveys were conducted by Aquatic Control in 2025. Nathan still hopes to review the data collected in past years when he gets a chance. There continues to be no issues with the fish habitat structures added to pond 2 in 2022 as anticipated. If you are interested in helping with fish habitat in the other ponds, please contact Nathan.

Note: residents are not allowed to add fish habitats without Board approval as they must meet specifications.

Care of Ponds:

We continued services with our new company, Aquatic Control, with no issues. This company is based locally (Williamsville) and has been working closely with Nathan to customize our pond treatments to address nuisance aquatic weeds while maintaining healthy ponds for the fish.

Please remember to maintain a buffer of at least 10-15 feet of no lawn fertilizer near the ponds or stormwater inlets. Fertilizer (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the ponds promote excessive algae and other aquatic plants that are unsightly, not healthy for the ponds and cause increased cost to remove.

Aquatic Control is using a special treatment to help remove phosphorous from the ponds, a primary cause of excessive algae growth. Please remind your lawn companies! Regarding fountain and aeration equipment during 2025, repairs were made to the fountain in pond 3, and repairs will be made to pond 2 fountain this winter.

Due to ongoing muskrat damage to fountain wires, additional steel sleeves will be added in 2026 to prevent chewing. The aeration equipment in pond 2 was old, broken, and was replaced in 2025.  The pond 1 aeration compressor was also repaired. The Board met to discuss the need for future dredging. Nathan plans to take his kayak out this spring and update the sediment deposition maps for the Board.
